Maintenance of Drive / Trouble Shooting
V-belts are amongst the most reliable and trouble free
means of power transmission. However, these drive belts require periodic
inspection and maintenance, both while drive is running and while it is
stationary. Few of the simple rules for the maintenance of drive belts are
as follows:
- Check the tension after certain time
- Protect your belt from sunlight through guard
- If any belt of the set fails, replace complete set
|
In addition to above-mentioned measures, for the proper
maintenance of drive, it is recommended that always use a proper pulley,
either of the recommended size or standard pulley. Make sure that pulley is
quality certified and have proper grooves. It is also recommended that
always use dynamically balanced pulley.

Trouble Shooting
Some of the common belt problems and their causes are
listed below along with the remedial measures. However, it is always
recommended to get the help of a technical hand from the respective field
for any kind of repair and replacement work.
|
PROBLEMS |
PROBABLE CAUSES |
REMEDIES |
| CUT OR CRACK FROM INNER
SIDE |
- Pulley diameter less than minimum recommended
- Excess belt slip
- Temp. too high on the drive
|
- Selection of proper drive
- Check belt tension and number of belts.
- Save belt from heat through different means
|
| BELT TURNED OVER |
- Foreign particle on the pulley
- Very high tension to belt
- Excess belt flap
- Jerk load
- Pulley groove not proper
- Misalignment
|
- Save from foreign particles
- Re-tensioning
- Use idler
- Tension should be proper
- Use correct pulley
- Do proper alignment
|
| WEAR OUT |
- Pulley groove not proper
- Mismatched belts
- Pulley size not proper
- Misalignment
- Due to slip
- Foreign material
|
- Use correct pulley
- Use preset belts
- Use recommended pulley size
- Align properly
- Tension properly
- Remove foreign particles
|
| BELT BREAKS |
- Foreign obstruction
- Less number of belts
- Wrong belt selection
- Jerk load
- Belt installed over pulley forcefully
|
- Install guard on the drive
- Use complete set as per real design of the drive
- Use proper belt section as per drive requirement
- Check belt tension and design
- Reduce centre distance then install and tension
|
| EXCESS ELONGATION |
- New and old belts
- Belts of different manufacturers
- Belts of different codes
|
- Change complete set
- Use complete set of one manufacturer
- Use preset belts on the drive
